#301 (#19 of 2013) - If Love Dares Enough (The Montbryce Legacy) ~ Anna Markland *NEW AUTHOR

Description:

Violence arouses Hugh.
He avoids women ... but he cannot turn a blind eye to the abuse Devona suffers at the hands of her husband, even at the risk of angering his King.

Product Description:

I got this from Kindle as a freebie.  At time of writing this post it is £1.91.

Apparently, this is the third book in the series.  At 182 pages I would consider it a Novella.

Book 1 - Conquering Passion
Book 2 - A Man of Value
Book 3 - If Love Dares Enough
Book 4 - Passion in the Blood

There is also a Montbryce Next Generation, and the author has written other pieces of fiction, which as far as I can work out are based on the Medieval.

Summary:

Although this book is way outside my usual time period, I have to admit that I loved it.

In fact it's fair to say that I couldn't actually put it down.

Fabulous well paced story, with characters that you could invest in and a believable villain.

Amazon only go up to 5 stars, but I would be happy to give this a 5+ star rating.  I paid nothing for this and feel blessed to be introduced to this author, and can't wait to read more.

If you read anything this year, have a go at this series of books.

* * * *

Summary:

Well, I'm glad I snagged this as a freebie!

Actually, in this instance not because of the writing, which from the very short example of it, was just fine and dandy.

Having thought about it .....  if I paid the current price of 77p I would feel more that a bit cheated, as this piece of literature is no more than half a prologue.  True, the author has provided a good "hook in", but there is absolutely no conclusion or satisfaction in reading it, other than to decide that it might be wroth seeing where she goes from there.

Pretty much better to have written a true short story or Novella setting the scene that was was offered.  I read many authors who have nice well concluded prologues at the beginning of the books .... and they don't have the bare-faced cheek to make you pay for it.

All in all, because I feel that this is no more than an excerpt that they are expecting to be paid for, not a satisfactory prelude/prologue ... the writing alone justifies a 2 star rating overall.  This could so easily have been much higher (the quality of the actual writing was better than a lot of others) if it could be perceived as better value for the money.

Don't get me wrong, I would probably read the book attached to this at some point ... but now won't be making it a priority due to my perception of having been ripped off a little (even though I got it for free).  I'm all for "hooking readers in", but expect slightly more usually to make it worth while picking up the Kindle.

* * * *

Summary:

Just a normal tale of boy meets girl, dislikes everything she stands for and mis-trusts her deeply, coupled with a mother who knows better and burgeoning love, but what was different was just how beautifully this was written.

A 5 star read all the way, and I found it difficult to put down.  All along I was willing them to come together and realise how perfect they were, for each other and together.

There is no doubt that I will read more by this truly inspiring author.

Novella - 220 pages.

Summary:

Not the longest book in the work, but thoroughly enjoyable none the less.

I snagged it as a freebie download, but there is no doubt I would have been happy enough to pay for this book, and actually have now added other books in the series to my Wish List, and am eagerly looking forward to reading the other sub-character stories.

All in all a 4 star read, it could have been a 5 though if the author had developed the plot - thus lengthening the story - to obtain a full novel.

* * * *

Summary:

It was marginally okay to read some of the excerpts, and confirmed that they should be added to my Wish List, however all in all, I'd much rather read a quick short story or Novella to hook me into an author.

On balance based on the above observation about being"hooked in" I think a 2 star rating is appropriate.

Product Details:

35 page Novella.  Purchased on Kindle free, and at the time of this review it is still being offered as a freebie.

* * * *

Summary:

It took only about 10 minutes to read this, which doesn't really seem like the effort was worth it.

As far as the writing goes, it ways okay ... just okay.  I was left feeling that really with just a little bit of effort the actual plot could have been expanded to at least reach Novella proportions, rather than what I consider to be just a very short story.

Therefore a 3 star read, which has gone into my One Offs folder.  That notwithstanding, I would probably read something longer by this author in the future.

Summary:

What an absolutely delightful read.  I found it bright, sparking and fast paced with a lovely conclusion.  It's a shame it was a novella, as the substance would have been there with a few more added details to make a fabulous full length tale.

A 5 star read, and highly recommended if you love historical romances.

#294 (#12 of 2013) ~ Lady Deception - Rizzo Rosko *NEW AUTHOR

She would do anything for the money.

Though Elizabeth Holton is the daughter of a wealthy knight, she was raised in poverty after her mother ran away before she was born. ‘For your protection,’ she would say, but Eliza’s mother had to sell her body to cruel men to provide for her daughter.
After her death, Eliza made up her mind to become the lady she believes herself to be. She arranged for the local lord’s son to have an accident while out riding. But the men she hired were too severe. Instead of merely robbing Blaise Gray, they beat him and left him for dead.

Except fall in love.

For saving his life, Eliza is brought to live in Blaise’s castle where she fights her attraction to him, terrified of the pain she will feel should he discover it was her who nearly ended his life.
Though Blaise cannot deny his heated lust for the beautiful peasant girl who saved his life, he also cannot halt his suspicion that she may have had something to do with his attack. It wouldn’t have been the first time someone from the lower class attempted to use him, yet he finds himself falling in love with her anyway. But the confirmation that she had nearly killed him to become a lady could be his undoing.

Purchased on Kindle as a freebie, but at the time of this review it's listed as £1.53.

208 pages in length.

Summary:

I have been debating for about half an hour about how I feel about this piece of fiction.

In the end I decided that I couldn't really warrant more than 3 star rating for it.

For me, the characters lacked depth, the pace was slow and there was a lack of content to the piece as a whole.  It left me feeling decidedly underwhelmed in a way, as if the author had failed to engender any kind of emotion into the piece ... almost like it had been written as a casual observer rather with any real feeling being achieved.

I've popped it in my One Off Reads folder, but would like to reading something else by Ms Rosk to see if this was a one off baddie, and I could gel with more of her work.

#293 (#11 of 2013) - Undeniable Rouge (The Rogues Club, Book 1) ~ Annette Blair *NEW AUTHOR

Description:

Product Details:

Purchased for Kindle as a Freebie, but at the time of this post it is available at £1.98.

320 pages in length.

* * *

Summary:

I thoroughly enjoyed this tale of love in the face of what the heroine assumed would only earn her disgust.

Apart from the odd grammar/spelling mistake this was an exceptionally crafted piece of fiction, and was happy to learn it's the first book in a set of them.  I think I also spotted an Americanism in there of "blocks" ... oh if only they would learn that we do not have a block system in England ... it grates.

I really cannot wait to read the rest of the series, and this particular gem of an historical romance garnered 5 stars.

Highly recommended, and the rest of this series are going on my Wish List.

Summary

It was an okay piece of fiction I suppose  although the main characters were a bit thinly written.  Definitely "victim" written all over them".

The whole piece also lacked pace in places.

I can't say that I would actively seek out anything else by this author.  All things considered a 3 star rating.

Summary:

Exceptionally well written story, with loveable characters and an easy empathy level.

I have to say that I don't read that much Contemporary Fiction, and never under usual circumstances read anything labelled "Suspense", however it was another free read picked up at Amazon, so I thought I would give it a go as it was stilled tagged as a Romance.

It turned out from page one that it was a real page turner, and I just couldn't put it down.  Not to say that you should think that it was alll high drama, there was the ghost element, but at no point did I find it worryingly so.

All in all a 5+ stars for this, and I would actively seek out anything by this author.  Best of all people, as at the date of publishing this review it is still free on Amazon, and I'm not sure as it's certainly worthy of paying cold hard cash for.

#288 (#6 of 2013) - The Bride and The Brute ~ Laurell O'Donnell ~ NEW AUTHOR

Actually this was one that I missed from last year, hence this quick post to make sure I don't miss it off my reading record.

To be honest I don't remember too much about it, other than it was a bit long-winded and ponderous.  An indication that that is a true recollection is that fact that it was put in my "One Off Reads" section on the Kindle.  Therefore I will aware 2 stars.

Expect a few more posts like this one, as I'm pretty sure I missed quite a few last year during our move.

I fell in love with the main characters from the start, and empathised with their plight .... for me this demonstrates that it is well written.

This book comes highly recommended.  For me it was another free Amazon purchase, but I would have been more than happy to have paid hold card cash for it, and will actively seek out more by her.

Summary:

A contemporary book of prose and author's thoughts, something out of the ordinary for me.

I picked it up as a free offering, but would not have normally wasted my cash on something like this.

Having said that it is fairly well written, although there were minor spelling/grammatical errors here and there.

If prose are your thing, you might like it, but I do feel it is a little over priced for just 36 pages.

3 Stars.

#283 (#1 of 2013) - Quintspinner: A Pirate's Quest ~ Dianne Greenlay *NEW AUTHOR

Purchased:

Kindle, I picked up as a free one.

Product Description

A secret and unauthorized trip through the chaos of a 1717 London marketplace takes a bizarre twist for 16 year old Tess. Unexpectedly witnessing the murder of a renowned Seer, Tess becomes the keeper of the old woman's legendary spinner ring and its supposed power of prophecy. Returning home, Tess bears the brunt of her father's rage when he is informed of her disobedient excursion. An ensuing altercation with her father leads Tess to the discovery of a family secret that stuns her. Even so, she never imagines that she will soon find herself forcibly betrothed to the murderer and trapped on a ship bound for the pirate-infested waters of the West Indies. With increasing dread, she realizes a growing attraction that she has for a handsome sailor puts both their lives at risk. Moreover, she quickly discovers that her ruthless fiance covets her only for her ring and its power, and will stop at nothing to obtain it for himself. The stakes for survival become unbearably high when she is thrust into the hands of a marauding band of pirates, and she must make an agonizing and life-threatening choice for herself. A tale of pirates and treasure, love and betrayal, all bound together by a dash of ancient magic, Quintspinner has been described by readers as "a wonderfully entertaining, fast and furious ride; Lord of the Rings meets Pirates of the Caribbean".

About the Author

Dianne Greenlay is the author of Quintspinner - A Pirate's Quest, a novel that has won numerous awards including Best YA, Best Historical, and was runner-up for Book of the Year, but her most notable accomplishment was to have raised a family of six children in a household with one bathroom and everyone got out alive. She lives on the Canadian prairies with Hot Stuff Hubby, where she shares her home and yard with numerous animals both wild and tame.

Assessment:

Yet another one picked up free from Kindle (I love that I can do that).

Immediately, it didn't strike me as something that I would like, but decided as I hadn't had to shell out hard cash on it, I might as well try and expand my horizons a mite this year.  Especially, as my reading tally was well down on my projected target last year.

However, I would say from about the first Chapter ... it always takes a little while I find with a new author .... I was interested, and by about five chapters in I couldn't put the book down.

I love the main character Tess, and was fascinated with the inter-play between her and Cassie, and her growing feels for William.

Additionally, there is the journey that Tess travels to discover the powers that lay will eventually be hers.

Strongly recommended that you give the whole series a try, I know I am going to.  A heady mix of histroical, with some romance, but a magical and mythical twist.

I awarded it 5 stars on Amazon, but they don't go higher.  On here it is getting the 5 Star + rating.
