#380 ~ Letters on a Page

Letters on a pageLetters on a page by Jayde Griffiths

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

The Author of this book of poetry, Jayde Griffiths, very kindly sent me a free Kindle copy in return for an honest Review from me.

I found it to be quite an enjoyable little book of quick to read and digest poems, that one could dip into every once and awhile for enjoyment.

I would say that there were one or two formatting issues, but nothing major.

If poetry is your thing, or even if it isn't but you want to just kick back and let your mind breath for a minute, then give this little book a try - 3 stars from me.

Product Details:

As I mentioned above, Jayde very kindly sent me a Kindle file, but if you fancy giving it a go you can download a copy HERE, at £1.94 it's not a bad price at all.

Errors/Bug Bears:

There were a couple of tiny formatting issues, but then again, that could be down to the way I drag it over to me Kindle, so I'm not making a big thing of them.

#379 ~ Time Crystal 1 - The Convergence

Time Crystal 1 - The Convergence (The Eridon Chronicles)Time Crystal 1 - The Convergence by Ethan Somerville

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Storm Publishing, 10th August 209
461 Pages
Reading Age:  Adult
Genre:  Fiction > Fantasy > Time Travel

This was one of my DSOA (Daily Selection for free Kindle Download on Amazon) on my Blog in March. At the time of writing this Review' (September 2013) its still available on Amazon for free HERE to pick up a copy (although I'm not sure how much longer it will be available as a free download. Having said that, it would be well worthing paying for).

It's actually the first Ethan Somerville title that I've read, and am happy to advise that I found it thoroughly enjoyable.

Without wishing too many spoilers: an effeminate-looking Alien collects together the oddest assortment of people from various time periods to help him seek out and capture a Crystal that could effect his entire planet, and stave off a power hungry Warrior from another planet.

How much use will a bi-sexual pirate, Victorian harlot, illiterate Scottish maiden, a Viking's sex slave nun and a modern teenager actually be to him, and how much trouble can they actually get into?Well, you'll just have to read it to find out, but suffice to say, I loved it.

All in all, 4 stars is highly appropriate, and I can't wait to read more in this series - I will add the details on the series on my "Review by Series" section on the blog).

EDITED TO ADD:  having sat and typed the Error/Bug Bear list (below) from my highlighted notes on Baby, I have just realised how many there were.  I was almost tempted to drop a star off the rating.  However, the overall piece was enjoyable, and the errors fairly minor, that I decided to be generous and leave the rating as it is.

Errors/Bug Bears:

With Kindle files I think it will be easier to quote the location for the start of the page (sometimes I will quote from the end of the previous page if appropriate as well) that the error/bug bear is on, rather than the percentage (as that covers 2 or 3 pages at the size of Font I use).

Loc 1939:  I'm sorry Heath - I guess I shouldn't have roused on you as soon as you walked in.

Bug bear with this:

I take issue with the the use of "roused" in this context.  It would have been better to use "started on" on "confronted you".

Correct to:

Loc 4343:  He's gotten off - now where's he going?

Bug bear:

It's well known by now just how much I dislike the use of "gotten", it smacks of imagination.  However in this case as it's somebody talking, I will have to reluctantly have to let it go!

Loc 5051:  Do you have you anything else to say to me, Kirsty?

Happy reading.

#378 - A Life to Waste

A Life To WasteA Life To Waste by Andrew Lennon

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Andrew Lennon, the Author, kindly provided me with a free MOBI file of this Novella, in exchange for an honest and unbiased Review.

I have to say first thing, that normally, I'm not that into horror, but was highly surprised by this offering from Andrew.

From a fairly innocent start after a life completely wasted by an accident and inability to get a grip, this turned into a fascinating horror that I really got into, and an accidental Hero was born.

I don't want to provide any spoilers, but really you should definitely read this if you're into horror, and even if you aren't give it a go, as the writing is really quite good.

The only thing small thing that bothered me was some of the formatting, some of the page numbers and Author Name ran onto the next page, and some odd line spacing. I'm not shouting too loud about this though, as (a) it was liveable with; and (b) it could simply be that as this was a MOBI file I added to my Kindle myself that the actual Kindle copy you would download from Amazon could be perfectly fine. Either way, it wasn't a major issue, and didn't intrude on my actual enjoyment of this Novella.

Other than that there were no Errors/Bug Bears that were obvious, and the Author should be congratulated on a good product.

With a little bit more work, and some added twists and turns in the plot, this could have gone the distance to a full length novel, and probably another star, as it is 3 stars from me. I would definitely read more by Andrew, and look forward to the success of this piece of work, and more from him in the future.

Product Details:

As I mentioned above, I was provided with a MOFI file copy for my Kindle free direct from the Author, Andrew Lennon, in return for an honest and unbiased Review.

#377 - The Viscount's Midsummer Mistress

The Viscount's Midsummer Mistress The Viscount's Midsummer Mistress by Suzy Stewart Dubot

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was a gentle and pleasant meander through a tale of the twists and turns of fate.

However, I should stress that whilst it was indeed gentle, it wasn't at any time boring.

I don't want to get accused again of spoiling the plot, so all I will say is that it's always nice to have a happy ending, where everything works out ticketyboo at just the right moment.

Happy am I to report that the English was of an acceptable quality, which makes a nice change these days, and there were only a very few actual errors/bug bears (as usual, you can find them listed towards the bottom of this post)

My only criticism is centred around the use of footnotes, which if they are pertinent to complicated pieces of historical information, etc., are useful, but in this case they were used to mark quite inconsequential bits of information ...... truth to tell, I found them a little condescending.

Other than that, well done to the Author, and a 3 star rating. I shall certainly read more by her.

Product Details:

This was one of my Daily Selections for Free Kindle Download on Amazon back in March 2013, and at the time of writing this post it's available HERE for £2.60.  Which is not an unreasonable price for this read given the quality of the product.

Please note that the cover image shown above is for the paperback version, and not the Kindle download on Amazon.  GoodReads didn't have the Kindle version on their list, and despite the fact that I'm a Librarian on there, I was too lazy to add one!!

#376 - Soul Hill Lullabies

Soul Hill LullabiesSoul Hill Lullabies by Stephanie Mesler

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Please note that I was provided with a free copy of this book via the First Reads Scheme on Good Reads (part of the Amazon family)in return for an honest review.

This was well written poetry about life in and around Alma Hill, New York.

It gave a real sense of place, characters to be found in any small place and a continuity of family and tradition. At times it was almost poetic prose for me.

I particularly loved Poem Number 8: My Mother's Red Shoes and Poem 12: Monday's Child.

#375 - Afterlife (Box Set)

The Afterlife Series Box SetThe Afterlife Series Box Set by Willow Rose

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

I must admit that I had been expecting far more form this read, than it actually managed to deliver.

Disappointingly, it did have potential to be really quite good. However, the author's use of language was a little too naive. At times the plot hit just about the right tempo, and at others it just limped along. Even if this book was written specifically for the YA group, it falls short.

As far as characterisation was concerned, I never truly invested in Meghan, she came across as a miss nelly-know-all-goodie-gumdrops. As for Mick ..... stalker!

I was also failed to be convinced about the whole spiritual realm the author had going on, and wondered just why she portrayed it so near to real life with weddings, births etc.

If the writing had been tightened up, and a careful eye kept on pace, as well as just a little bit more imagination into the possibilities of the adventures the spirits' could have got up to, then this had the promise to be a much better read.

The end was precipitous, and left answers about what had gone on in Meghan's life, and also who the actual agent for the darkside is at the Academy. Will I bother with the 4th book in the series. Honestly, I'm not sure, if it comes up as a freebie then maybe, but I wouldn't waste hard earned on buying a copy.

Product details:

This was featured as one of my Daily Selections' back in March of this year.

A box set featured Books 1 (Beyond); Book 2 (Serenity); and Book 3 (Endurance).  You can download it from Amazon HERE.  At the time of writing this post it's available at £3.39 for the three books.

A further book (Book 4: Courageous) has now also been released.

I will update the "Review by Series" page with the details - it's the Afterlife Series.

Errors/Bug Bears:

Indie Writer (Self-published)
*Introducing a New Author to the Blog*

If in doubt, revert to type .... yep, an Historical Romance for today's selection.

Very much a shot in the dark, as it's a New Release; there are no Reviews; and I have never read this Author before:

Samantha Randall is a spirited young English beauty whose impetuosity puts her in a very compromising situation and the only thing that can salvage her reputation is marriage to Christopher Welles, a man she barely knows. As soon as the vows are spoken, her new husband whisks her off to his ship and they sail the following morning for America, to Christopher's home in the Spanish held Territory of West Florida. Though the voyage was uneventful, the same cannot be said for the newly-weds who are in constant conflict with each other - their fragile relationship, which they struggle to build, is forever being tested by misunderstandings and outside interference. Once settled in Christopher's home on the northern coast of Florida, they become closer and eventually fall in love - yet there are still challenges to come that will threaten to tear their world apart, some from outside forces beyond their control, others closer at hand.
With misfortune constantly overshadowing their lives, how will Christopher and Samantha - whose love was born of indiscretion and nurtured by enduring passion - be able to triumph over adversity and recapture the happiness that was so heartlessly taken from them?

I've taken a chance and downloaded it, if you would like to pick up a copy whilst it's free click HERE.

I haven't checked on Amazon for a few days, and was delighted to note that my Reviewer Status has risen (or dropped depending on which way one looks at it) to the late 2,000's .......... that made me very happy! I'm still heading in the right direction, it just takes longer the higher up the list you get.

There should be a couple of Reviews uploaded later on today, I've just finished reading a 3 Book Set, and also a short book of prose.

Happy reading for now peeps.

My Daily Selection for Free Kindle Download on Amazon

Kindle Store > Books > Fiction > Fairy Tale > Fantasy
Indie Writer (Self-published)
*Introducing a New Author to the Blog*

The synopsis appealed to me .... who wouldn't want to find out what made Peter Pan tick?

Peter’s side of the story at last!

Mid-Summer Night’s Eve 1706
Quivering with fear and rage, a six-year-old Peter crouches among the multi-coloured blooms and exotic scents at the bottom of his family’s enormous garden. He is determined to run away. Bored with her distinguished but dull companions, the exquisitely beautiful but rashly daring Fairie, Tinkerbell, observes him. For mischief’s sake, or so she thinks, she shows herself and shockingly initiates a conversation with ‘this perfectly scrumptious little human being’. Soon Peter’s life is changed forever, with inter-dimensional repercussions that ring down the centuries.

From the Fairies’ home dimension and the Neverland, a realm as cosy and boundless as a child’s imagination, to London’s filthy streets and burning skies, the adventures of the boy who wouldn’t grow up are fully told. Learn about Peter’s official adoption by the Fairies and his tempestuous, enduring relationship with Tinkerbell. Read the truth about where he found the Lost Boys and the surprise identity of his deadliest enemy. Find out what made Captain Hook tick, and discover the nature of Peter’s romantic attachments to Wendy and her progeny. His combat service with the Royal Air Force in World War Two is revealed for the first time, as is a scandal that shook two dimensions and still hides a deep secret in yet another.

JM Barrie assigned the rights of ‘Peter Pan’ to Great Ormond Street Hospital for children. Many of those rights have now expired, but the desire to help GOSH lives on with Peter’s autobiography and 50% of the profits from this book will be donated to that cause.

Editor’s Note:
Conventional publishers hate what cannot be categorized. Is this action–adventure? Romantic fiction, or fantasy? True autobiography, or military history? What if it is all those things? I don’t know myself, but thanks to Amazon Kindle, Peter’s real story can now be brought before the public.
He first came to me for advice and assistance 30 years ago, mostly because I’d been an American paratrooper in my youth and had had a near-death experience in Vietnam. My published books are all based on myth and legend or the supernatural. He guessed rightly that I was not fully part of one world or the other, and chose me to act for him as editor of his memoirs. Fearing both the mad house and the talk show circuit, Peter was understandably shy of publicity. Back then, he decided against publication but has finally changed his mind.

I would like to thank Jane Fuller and Kate Bevan for helping me prepare the manuscript for publication because, despite what Peter thinks, I’m no great shakes as an editor.

Above all, Peter’s multi-dimensional life has been one of wonder and the mysteries of existence. His story is told with honesty and true feeling. We have altered nothing, apart from the correction of spelling and modernising some archaic slang for clarity.

Peter insists that it is not his intention to debunk Sir James Barrie’s work. Nor does he fear this autobiography will spoil anyone’s enjoyment of it. There may, however, be people who wish to read of the true events that gave birth to the classic book and stage play. Peter Pan hopes his readers will enjoy and benefit from the lessons of his long and extraordinary life.

I couldn't hit the button for this one, which is HERE, just in case I missed it later on - although it will be a very long time until I can get around to reading it, as my WTR list is getting longer by the day with the arrival of the postman.

Happy reading, and I hope you enjoy this one.

*Introducing a New Author to the Blog*

Well, I say daily selection ....... that's a bit of a joke recently .... it should probably be "my sometimes daily, but more often that not a few times of a week selection".

Anyhoo, here's the selection for today - an Antipodean romance for a Sunday by the fire:

In 1854, the Australia goldfields swirl with the heated danger and betrayal of the Eureka Stockade rebellion. At the center of this maelstrom is Melanie O'Dea, a woman with a price on her head and the authorities on her heels. Melanie accepts aid from a neighbor, The Honorable Michael Guilford, but this places her in even more peril. After he seduces her and callously discards her, Melanie is left to fend for herself. Can she endure such treachery and survive the sweeping winds of uncertainty?

#374 ~ The Watermen

The WatermenThe Watermen by Patrick Easter

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

(Tom Pascoe:  #1)

I was lucky enough to meet the Author, Patrick Easter at the Hailsham WI Book Club a month or so ago, and I have to say that the impression I had gained from him at the time was that he seemed to have certainly researched his subject well, and also had personal experience in policing (albeit of the modern day variety). He was also charming and packed full of charisma .... yes, it's true I have a bit of a crush on him!

Luckily, the organiser of the Group, Diane, lent me her copy of his novel to read for Review. As always with me, you will only get an honest one.

My first impressions were true, the book is well written, with good historical reference - apparently according to Patrick, real history buffs can pick holes in some of it - and do - but, for me it had an authentic feel, and that is all that counts are far as I'm personally concerned. The only thing that bothered me was his mention of Tom wearing a "blouse". Now, it's not the first time that I have come across this, I am sure some of you will remember my recent rant about an American Author that referred to a man's blouse. I am now beginning to wonder if I'm wrong, and they did clearly wear them. I think some historical research of my own might be called for, and then a slice of humble pie if they are proved right.

I have a huge liking for our leading man, Tom Pascoe, and also found myself routing for his side-kick Sam.

Why, oh why couldn't the lovely Miss Tompkins fall for him with a big bang? Although, I am still holding out hope that he can win her in the end, or find a worth lady from some other source.

All in all, a lovely and informative novel, and I can't wait to read the next one.

Four stars from me.
