#437 ~ Forever

Forever (The Wolves of Mercy Falls, #3)Forever by Maggie Stiefvater

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Mercy Falls Series Book #3

This follows on nicely from my last review, as it was Book 3 in the Mercy Falls Series.

Still busy at work, I opted to listen to this rather than be slower and read a copy, so I borrowed my copy from the local library.

In point of fact, this follow on book had less teenage angst that Shiver. There was enough to make the plot interesting and move on though. A whole star's worth improvement between the two books, and for me much more enjoyable.

#436 Linger

Linger (The Wolves of Mercy Falls, #2)Linger by Maggie Stiefvater

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Mercy Falls Series #Book 2

I will admit that I didn't read the first book in the series, but actually it probably would not have changed my opinion on this one.

As it was a busy time at work, I decided that I would be able to listen to this rather than be slower and read a copy, so I borrowed my copy from the local library. Was the difference between listening and reading any different?

Not really. In point of fact the narration was very good, and it didn't detract from the reading experience.

Towards the end I did find that the teenage angst in the plot began to grate a little, however it was a reasonable offering of Young Adult fiction.

I also should comment on the weird German quote at the beginning - I couldn't see the point of it, and didn't feel it added to the tone of the book at all.

I will give the third book in the Mercy Falls series a go, just to see how it all pans out.

I borrowed it from the local library as an audio book, and listened to it on Baby (my Kindle Fire HD), but it's available HERE in all formats.

#398 ~ My Life at the Bottom of the Food Chain

My Life at the Bottom of the Food ChainMy Life at the Bottom of the Food Chain by Rich Samuels

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I was very kindly sent a free paperback copy of this via the Good Reads First Reads Scheme.

This wasn't the longest book, with a plot full of twists and turns. However, it made for it by being an interesting read with the plot focusing on not what will happen, but how your mind can work on your worst fears to make you imagine many varied scenarios of what might happen.  With a clear message that just because you assume somebody is out to get you, you should at least give them a fair hearing before you take flight.

I am always a sucker for a nerdy-quirky protagonist, so on the whole I found this to be an enjoyable read. Well written, with about two typos/grammatical errors - given there were so few I didn't bother to make a note of them.

I liked the way Rich writes, and would be more than happy to read other things by him. 4 Stars from me, I am sure you will enjoy it too.

Product Details

You can get a copy HERE.  The Kindle file is listed at £2.03 and the paperback for £4.75, both of which are good value for money in my humble opinion.

Published by:        RLS Ventures

Errors/Bug Bears

As mentioned above, there was nothing significant enough to merit mention.

Summary/thoughts:

I was very lucky to be provided with a copy of this book to Review via the First Reads Scheme on Good Reads.

Amazon doesn't appear to have a classification for this, but after reading I have come to the conclusion that it's aimed at the Late Teens/Young Adult market.  That having been said, as a fully formed adult of advanced years I enjoyed.

My 15 year old has asked if she could read it too, and I'm looking forward to hearing her thoughts on it.  It may well appeal to early teens as well.

A seriously cool cover .... we both loved it, and an interesting plot that moved along at a reasonable pace.  It was written in a compartmentalised fashion, but it didn't detract from the reading.

Actually, there were lovely little bits of humour scattered here and there, and I adored the lovely Lazy-Eye Susan character.

There were a few errors in the book (which I will detail below).  Whilst they weren't major it would be nice to see them changed if at all possible.  Obviously, the bug bears are just that for me personally.

Under my new rating system introduced this month the rating for this read is:

4 Star

I enjoyed it, but it didn't blow my mind.  Give it a try, I'd love to hear what you think of it.

Errors and Bug Bears:

As mentioned above I found a few errors, which it would be lovely to see fixed.

I also had a couple of bug bears, which are only points that niggled me, but might not worry anybody else.

I'll list the errors first:

Page 43 - "Drew didn't see any spider webs, which meant that the stairs used frequently." Missing word - stairs were used.

Page 56 - "...like the L-train that alongside our block".  Missing word - runs alongside.

Page 77 - "He bend down to pick up the quarter, but got waved him off".  Confused end of sentence it should be either but got waved off or he waved him off.

Page 97 - "Post-hypnotic suggestion ...".  Italic needs to be removed on last letter of suggestion.

My Bug Bears were:

Page 33 - "They lit the candles and sat inside the smiley face, their hands jointed.  Susan led them in intonation."  I felt that incantation would have scanned better, but that's just me.  Strictly speaking intonation is correct.

Page 76 - "Tires".  American spelling I know, but it grates on me, and I like to see tyres, it's just my own prejudice.

The total page count showing on Goods Reads for this book was 214, but the book has 207 pages.  It would be nice to see this corrected, but it is a really minor point.

My Daily (well almost after a long weekend off) Selection for Free Kindle Download at Amazon

Kindle Store > Books > Fiction > Young Adult > Horror > Vampires
Indie Writer (Self-published) another Author is also credited CJ Pinard

I took the chance and had a nice long weekend break, so we've had a break from my selections.  Never fear though I'm back and, as promised, have a nice Vampire one for you:

Danger lurks in the dead of night...

Seventeen year old Nikki and her twin brother, Nathan, move to the small town of Shore Lake to start over after their mother is brutally attacked. When a missing teenager washes up on shore during their first night at the cabin and there are whispers of vampires in Shore Lake, Nikki begins to realize that there are things roaming in the darkness that are far more sinister than what they left behind in the city.

It's had 21 fairly decent reviews, and I whilst it seems primarily to be aimed at the YA/Teen market, some of those reviews have been from adults that loved it - it has a 4.5 star rating on Amazon.  You can find it available as a free download HERE , and judge for yourself.

On Amazon today my rating has gone up over the weekend to 5,893 (>) - I am still heading in the right direction.  I would love to get to the top 1,000 Reviewers' some day .... so if you find the Daily Kindle Download info useful please go over to my Reviews on Amazon and leave me some positive feedback - which helps my rating, and will earn you my grateful thanks.
