One of the most entertaining books I've read this year, and can't wait to catch up on the whole of this series.

A long time ago it had been one of my 'Daily Picks' and at the time it would have been free, but it was just dropped into my library and I'd forgotten all about it.

At the time the cover and title had been a draw but as I'd forgotten all about that, and thus my expectations when starting to read it were quite low.

Seriously funny and well written, and as it turns out it made the grade as one of my 'Editor's picks'.

If you like sci-fi definitely try it, but if you like to read funny and entertaining literature, it will be worth your consideration.

Git it a try, I am sure you won't be disappointed.

I was luck enough to download this Kindle file as part of my Kindle Unlimited package (it's not now available through that), but you can get it HERE ... oh, and a bargin at 99p for the Kindle version at the moment.

Book 3 of the serialisation picks up a bit.

I'm loath to give too much in the way of a spoilers but, the fever continues on it destructive path and they try to survive on the island.

With the arrival of a stranger and something evil the whole plot picked up a bit.

The missing 'C' formatting continued in this book. There was also an increase the in the Errors/Bug Bears. I'm not sure if this might be because the author was concentrating on picking up the pace , or if it had a different editing team?

In which the mystery of the missing 'C' continues, and gotten makes an appearance.

My other main bone of contention was the fact that the Author couldn't decide how he wished to spell one woman's name - Marce or Marcy?  I do like consistency from an author.

Other than that:

Loc 865: ... willing to supply them if we come get them - come and get (coordinating conjunctions make me happy).

Loc 1133:  ... while I go grab a few things - go and grab (coordinating conjunctions make me happy).

This is a continuation of The Island: Fallen Earth Serialisation.

For me it just wasn't quite so good.

With the pandemic growing worse, and civil unrest our protagonist makes it to the Island, taking the old woman and her creepy grandson with him ... I won't say much more, otherwise I could spoil the plot.

The pace and characterisation with just a little weaker, which mean't I sometimes lost focus. Keep with if you can though.

There was odd formatting issue, whereby the 'C' in Chapter was missing for most of the book.

Another DSOA pick on my Blog, from about a year ago.

Lovely, lovely, cover art, and in point of fact not a bad plot line either, with nothing major in the way of errors and bug bears. Although reading it as a screen play takes a bit of adjustment, however, I've added trying to write one on my bucket list now.

It's difficult to much about the plot, otherwise there would be major spoilers, but I can certainly imagine how this would work as a film with say, Morgan Freeman, playing GOD (he's done it before, and was really very good at it!).

Part #1 in the Fallen Earth Series



This was an interesting diversion for me, I've never really read a serialisation before.

On the whole this first part was fairly enjoyable, with a decent plot pace and characterisation. I enjoyed the building of the main character, William Hill.  In particular, I enjoyed the little scene with the 'Little' cop.

The idea of a pandemic is no so far fetched, and it's interesting to consider just how modern man would cope with the withdrawal of its spoon-fed lifestyle.

As an aside, the cover art is very well drawn, and it was what drew me to feature it as a DSOA on the blog in April 2013.

There were one or two bug bears/errors, but nothing major, and on the whole I enjoyed the first part of this journey.

#438 ~ A Game of Thrones

Book #1 - A Song of Fire and Ice Series




By chance I had a conversation with a co-worker about Game of Thrones, shortly after I also saw a clip from the new series. A discussion about the elements involved to make a good book, and then a good TV adaptation ensued.

I don't like give opinions not based in fact if I can help it, so immediately downloaded the first book and started to read, with a view to getting a box set of the series as well if I felt it was any good ... it took only a few hours to decide, it wasn't just good, it was EXCELLENT, I got the whole TV series and have struggled to put the book down.

Using my analytical head, the author uses simple and compound sentences in the main, with some other literary tools such as simile, metaphor, repetition etc. That in itself would make it good, but the book transcends to exceptional.

His use of pace and characterisation are immense, and the world building is second to none. I love the fact that he kills and maims with frequency and no discrimination - it enhances the dramatic effect and keeps you reading to find out exactly what is going to happen next.

It's an epic read in size, all 800 pages, and graphic quality. There is no wonder that somebody chose to adapt this for TV. All the bones are there waiting for the fleshing out, and sexing up, to provide great entertainment.

When discussed it seems that everyone has a different favourite character, for very many different reasons. My daughter like Ned Stark, my husband like Danny and my favourite is never short on one liners, even though he is short in stature - Tyrion rules!

From me a better than 5 star rating.

I have to admit that "gotten" did creep on more than one occasion.  He also uses 'short ways' and 'long ways' instead of a short way, or a long way.

I also disliked the use of 'in back' on page 369, and 'stopped to visit' on page 47.


Apart from the above, there was one actual error on Page 711:  'Master Luwin's turret was so cluttered that it seemed to Bran a wonder that her ever found anything.' - should be he ever found anything.

For some reason, GoodReads failed to pick up this book as a "Read", and therefore count it towards last year's total ... so lucky me, it is now going towards the 2014 target of 150 books.  I completely smashed through last year's target, but as we are due to move house and with college taking up quite a bit of time I decided to just keep to an easy enough figure.

Beacon by Tyler Rudd Hall

Book #2 - Ronos Trilogy



I was very kindly provided with an Kindle copy by the Author, Tyler Rudd Hall following my First Reads Review of the first book in his series (Catalyst).

There was no awkward gapping, and this book started right after the end of the first book. Therefore, there was no change in the main protagonists, but there were some nice additional characters.

It was very nice to see that the same standard of writing was continued, and Tyler should be congratulated. The plot was moved on nicely, and I'm crossing my fingers that Tyler will be kind enough to let me have the final instalment in the Trilogy, as I need to know how the whole thing goes down!

I don't want to add any spoilers, as I'm keen for you to read with no pre-conceived notions, so give a try.

Most ebooks seem to have the odd error, and I'll be honest with you here, there were a few (not masses - as some were bug bears) - don't despair it didn't spoil the overall reading experience. I am very confident Tyler will put them right as a matter of priority.

Taking into consideration the way the plot linked in with the previous novel, the pace, characterisation and overall reading experience it's 4 Stars from me.

I was very kindly provided with a copy of this book via the First Reads Scheme on GoodReads in return for an honest Review.

I have to say that the time travel slant to novel was an interesting way to go.

It didn't seem that far fetched, as is sometimes the case with time travel fiction, and I had the distinct impression that the Author had taken time to research his materially really well - the whole work was handled sympathetically to the era.

From research, I believe that is one in a series featuring Tegan O'Malley, with her travelling through time to various different periods.

Despite the fact that I didn't have my notebook to hand, I did note a few tiny errors, but nothing that distracted from the work as a whole (I will not being going back over it to find them!). All in all, it was a well delivered piece of fiction, with a well paced feel and authentic characterisation.

3 stars from me, and I would certainly read more in this series, and indeed other offerings from Larry Names.

As it's a New Release there are only 3 Reviews, but they are all 5 star - normally I would be a bit suspicious about that few being 5 star, but I've checked out here other work (Vampiric Series) and they are pretty much 4.5 to 5 star), so I think we're safe.

My reading rate has thankfully picked up since Brat when back to School, and she's got so much Prep when she gets home that it's fairly quiet, so plenty of reading time for me.

Well, just in case you don't know, the other thing (apart from Historical Romance) I can resist is Steampunk .... I am eternally fascinated!

So I was delighted to see this little gem kicking around in the Science Fiction section for free Download:

#367 ~ New Atlantis Bundle

New Atlantis Bundle: Books 1-3 by Nhys Glover

I'm not going to lie to you, this one quite a big read at 468 pages, and divided over 3 books.

Overall, it was enjoyable: even eliciting a little bit of a tear at the end.

However, each of the three was a little of the formulaic side ..... i.e. person retrieved from our reality, and taken forward in time to the New Atlantis, fall in love with the rescuer, go on a mission with them, live happily ever after. Going forward I hope that the Author injects a bit more twists into the whole series.

Having said that, each book was inter-twined, and moved the whole plot forward. Still leaving somewhere to go for new books.

I happily bought into the plot, and the pace was mostly okay, although in a couple of places it dipped a little.

Not too many errors/bug bears (and I will list those, as usual, on my Blog Post #367 in August 2013, if anyone is interested.

I would certainly read more in this series.

Errors/Bug Bears:

At the beginning of the book Jac and Jack were used, and at first I thought it was typrographical, however reading on I realised that it was probably the way Cara perceived the name, and therefore it couldn't be classed as an error.

1%:  "change room"

Used a couple of times, and it might just be a difference in the use of English and North American, but I would say correct it to:  changing room.

2%:  "Changing history was complex, and it was thwart with danger."

Thwart is the wrong word.  Correct to:  fraught.

3%:  "What am I saying? It was no fun at all!"

Weird formatting thing going on I think, I don't think it is there for any purpose, so should probably be removed.

43%: "No, definitely not stolen.  We Retrieve people who, historical records tell us, disappeared intheir own time ..."

Correct to:   No, definitely not stolen.  We Retrieve people who, historical records tell us, disappeared in their own time ...

44%:  "She is pretty stranger.  But I can see Jane in there, luckily".

Correct to:  She is a pretty stranger.  But I can see Jane in there, luckily.

45%:  "....just until you get acclimated".

Not wrong necessarily, just ugly.  I would be much happier to see it corrected to:  just until you get acclimatised.

47%:  "Maggie and Julio both looked so surprise and horrified, she immediately felt relieved".

Correct to:  Maggie and Julio both looked so surprised and horrified, she immediately felt relieved.

50%:  "She wished she could accept the bonus of the upgraded body, instead of constantly feeling belittle by it".

Correct to:  She wished she could accept the bonus of the upgraded body, instead of constantly feeling belittled by it.

Book 3:  seems to have some formatting issues with the earlier chapters not starting on a new page - which is just  bit untidy.

71%:  "And from the nagging pain, there was quite a ways to go before he would be battle-ready again".

I really hate to see a sentence start with "and", plus ways to go is such bad English.  Correct to:  From the nagging pain, there was quite a way to go before he would be battle-ready again.

73%:  "He giving you a bit of trouble?"

I think this should be corrected to:  Is he giving you a bit of trouble?

77%:  "He wanted to reach out and stroke that long hair, fair back from her beautiful face".

Hmm, not sure if it should be corrected to:

He wanted to reach out and stroke that long fair hair back from her beautiful face; or

He wanted to reach out and stroke that long hair back from her face.


79%:  Author talks about an "agar" at several points.

Well, I'm from England, and around here it is an Aga.

80%:  more formatting problems, with the the next chapter not starting on a new page.

88%:  "It was going to be on dusk by the time the train reached the spot ..."

Correct to:  It was going to be dusk by the time the train reached the spot ...

92%:  "She snigger to herself and Julio frowned".

Correct to:  She sniggered to herself and Julio frowned.

Summary/thoughts:

A paperback copy of this book was provided to me via the First Reads Scheme on Good Reads (part of the Amazon Family) in return for an honest review.

I have to say that not once was I bored reading this .... actually, it was a shame when it came to an end.  I now need to find out what happens next - does Mac manage to get to Lynn in time, does the heinous Raymond get his comeuppance, and will Janelle ever be freed from the Alien threat, oh and just who is the only man in Passage with an Imp?

All the above, along with a nicely paced plot, just confirms, that this was a really well crafted piece of literature.

I'm not sure how long it will be before the next instalment, but I need it!

There were a few typographical errors (which will be listed in the Errors/Bug Bear section below), which is why I've downgraded it by 1 star, but even so it still earns a worthy:

for this great Science Fiction read.  if I'd still been working in half stars, it would have been worth a 4.5 in anybody's language.

Well done to Tyler Rudd Hall for providing such a well-crafted tale, and here's hoping the next instalment will be ready soon.
