#415 ~ Twisted Little Things and Other Stories

Twisted Little Things and Other Stories

Twisted Little Things and Other Stories by Amy Cross

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was a total break away choice for me, and actually I found it to be interestingly and thoughtfully written. The author does a really great job of constructing short story narratives - in this collection they sit together in a really nicely curated whole.

I didn't find any of the subject matter truly disturbing, but rather very thought provoking. Amy's work has a very 'Tales of the Unexpected' feel to it, and would probably work well in a TV episode format.

Production values were quite high, with only one thing to mention.  Unfortunately, I had forgotten to make a note on here before I returned the book and have now lost the highlighted note on my Kindle (stupid girl!).  It was only one missing/word order comment so it doesn't really matter.

Read as part of my Kindle Unlimited package.

#393 ~ Zombie Day Care

Zombie Day Care (Impact, #1)Zombie Day Care by Craig Halloran

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Impact Series Book #1

In the first place, this was a bit of fun for me to read, as it was actually something downloaded by my fifteen year old daughter, but in actuality it was reasonably enjoyable.

I loved the fact that there was a Quantum Leap reference in there, which if you read my Blog regularly, ties in with the recent Review (#391).

Although not earth-shatteringly awesome, it was enjoyable enough that I will happily admit to a strong probability at some point in the future of downloading other stuff by this Author, in particular the Impact Series, (Zombie Day Care is Book #1 in the Series).

From me, then, it's 4 Stars.

This was a DSOA back in March this year, and at the time of writing this Review it's still available for free Kindle Download HERE.  The paperback (if you subscribe to the whole ebooks aren't like books) is listed for £6.21

Book 1 in the Impact Series, I will update the Review by Author section at some point soon to show all the books currently in the series.

#378 - A Life to Waste

A Life To WasteA Life To Waste by Andrew Lennon

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Andrew Lennon, the Author, kindly provided me with a free MOBI file of this Novella, in exchange for an honest and unbiased Review.

I have to say first thing, that normally, I'm not that into horror, but was highly surprised by this offering from Andrew.

From a fairly innocent start after a life completely wasted by an accident and inability to get a grip, this turned into a fascinating horror that I really got into, and an accidental Hero was born.

I don't want to provide any spoilers, but really you should definitely read this if you're into horror, and even if you aren't give it a go, as the writing is really quite good.

The only thing small thing that bothered me was some of the formatting, some of the page numbers and Author Name ran onto the next page, and some odd line spacing. I'm not shouting too loud about this though, as (a) it was liveable with; and (b) it could simply be that as this was a MOBI file I added to my Kindle myself that the actual Kindle copy you would download from Amazon could be perfectly fine. Either way, it wasn't a major issue, and didn't intrude on my actual enjoyment of this Novella.

Other than that there were no Errors/Bug Bears that were obvious, and the Author should be congratulated on a good product.

With a little bit more work, and some added twists and turns in the plot, this could have gone the distance to a full length novel, and probably another star, as it is 3 stars from me. I would definitely read more by Andrew, and look forward to the success of this piece of work, and more from him in the future.

Product Details:

As I mentioned above, I was provided with a MOFI file copy for my Kindle free direct from the Author, Andrew Lennon, in return for an honest and unbiased Review.

If you are interested in reading this well written piece of literature click HERE.  It's available in both Kindle and paperback versions.

Errors/Bug Bears:

Nothing major.

Happy reading.

My Daily Selection for Free Kindle Download at Amazon

Kindle Store > Books > Fiction > Science Fiction > Horror
Indie Writer (Self-published)
*Introducing a New Author to the Blog*

I was advised by Michael Brookes, via Good Reads Lovers of Paranormal Group, that the novel would be available for free Kindle download for a few days:

A new entity is born into the internet.

Is it the rebirth of an ancient evil in a new realm? Or something much worse?

A sexy looking avatar grants wishes for people across the web, but nothing is truly free, and for those who accept, what price must be paid?

Sarah Mitchell must discover the truth of this creature and stop it while it can still be stopped, but why is a mysterious lawyer dogging her every step?

Faust 2.0 is the first book in the new Mitchell & Morton series.

It looked interesting, so I decided to download a copy for myself, and also feature as the DSOA.

If you fancy reading it, you can get it HERE.

Happy Reading

Indie Writer (Self-published)
*Introducing a New Author to the Blog*

I decided on something a bit Demon'esque today .... not sure how it will pan out though as it's an unknown Author to me, and there hasn't been a Review as it's a new release.  Still, nothing ventured, nothing gained:

Even for the undead, life is complicated. Though corrupt, archaic law rules them and they must abide by their vow to uphold it. For centuries, Duncan de Beaufou has done just that.

But Arkulus--the Defensores' high elder and keeper of the immortals--has darker intentions. Having always despised the creatures his guild is sworn to coral, he longs to rid himself the burden.

Entrapping Duncan with the allure of the forbidden, Arkulus deepens his centuries-old treachery, forcing Duncan to break his vows of honor in order to murder him without prejudice.

But fate has different plans for Duncan and the woman--Dawn Kendal--who'd been chosen as his downfall. When Isaac Gresham (a Defensore with a hidden agenda) offers his aid, to protect Dawn, Duncan is compelled to accept it. Even though he does not trust Isaac, he is willing to follow him to an altered destiny.

But amid his mental war between valor, desire, and a fate far worse than death, will Duncan only be resurrecting his own dark past? Or instead, will he ignite in the present a war of dead worlds?

It's my Darling Husband's birthday today, so we're off to Barcombe Mills for a Family walk with the dog and hopefully lunch at the Anchor Inn.

We might even go in search of the little train at Isfield after that.

I would love to get to the top 1,000 Reviewers' some day (my Status is show at the top of the Side Bar on the Blog) ....... so if you find the Daily Kindle Downloads info useful please go over to my Reviews on Amazon and leave me some positive feedback  on some of my reviews (which helps my rating, and will earn you my grateful thanks).

My Daily Selection for Free Kindle Download at Amazon

Kindle Store > Books > Fiction > Horror
*Introducing New Author to the Blog*

This caught my eye, something a bit different, a nice bit of horror:

Beyond the realm of our senses, beyond the realm of reality, a mysterious gateway exists.

Leading to parallel dimensions, it opens the doorway to the past, the future, or a different present.

Linked to this realm, a house and the woods nearby are conduits to a place only a few will ever have the courage to explore.

For three people torn by tragedy, their journey into the rift will offer hope, salvation or a terror beyond imagination, but once that journey is made, there can be no turning back...

Click HERE to get your download copy, but as always, I'm not sure how long it will be available as a freebie.

On Amazon today my rating is (<) 3,552. I suppose that I'm still heading in the right direction, but very slowly now. My Daily Selection for Free Kindle Download at Amazon

Kindle Store > Books > Fiction > Horror > Fantasy > Zombie (sort of)
*Introducing a New Author to the Blog*

Today I was tipped off by my friend on Good Reads, GB Hope - who's the author of this Zombie (well, kind of) offering ...... that it would be free on Amazon UK today:

A billionaire invites twelve strangers to spend six months locked away with him in his brand new, fully-equipped shopping mall. The reason: a social experiment at pretending to hide from a zombie apocalypse. Among them are Lee from Mobberley, the gorgeous Claudia from York, 16 year-old foster child Leila from Blackpool, and heartbroken Cathy from America. After the novelty of free food, unlimited clothes shopping and shooting robotic zombies from the roof has worn off, cliques and relationships develop. When the billionaire’s plan to set up a commune in the US is exposed, it splits everyone into two distinct factions, those keen to go and those vehemently against it, and this leads to increasing confrontation and a dramatic finale, as they all try to make it to the payday at the end of the six months, with Lee having to take drastic measures to protect his group, and Leila and Claudia in particular.

I am not sure how long it will be on free download, so you need to get it quickly ..... so far it's had 3 Reviews and is coming out at 5 Stars.  Click HERE to get your copy.

On Amazon today my rating is (<) 3,739. I suppose that I'm still heading in the right direction, but very slowly now. My Daily Selection for Free Kindle Download at Amazon

Kindle Store > Books > Fiction > Horror > Physic
Indie Writer (Self-published)
*Introducing a New Author to the Blog*

For some reason I felt a bit on the horrific side today ... and this caught my eye:

An ancient chant....an unwilling clairvoyant...bizarre phenomena at GMO protests...a Cornish megalith...psychic attack...a journey to inner worlds...

Lou Trewen was born with The Sight. At 14 she banished it from her life, with its visions and terrifying premonitions. Now she is 28, it returns - destroying her love life, threatening her job and her sanity.

Astral disturbances from the Sight attract a sinister figure. Obsessed with Lou's unique psychic powers, he stalks her, using occult techniques to infiltrate her life.

A reincarnated soul group gathers around Lou, to protect her and to oppose an old enemy. The Sight is a curse to Lou until an enigmatic stranger offers a means to turn the curse into a gift - with profound consequences for Humanity's awakening. But the risks to a novice are extreme, treading the path of mystics, mages and madmen...This is the story of the battle for one woman's soul, and for the emerging shift in global awareness.

Five Reviews (all 5 stars), so it looks to be promising.  Be warned it's a huge offering at 800 pages or so, that's going to take some reading.  I downloaded my copy this morning, and if you want to do the same click HERE whilst it's listed free.

In my happy little world today there's not much going on other than a quick trip to Limes Cross Nursery for a Cream Team .... their Tea Room is the best kept secret in East Sussex.  Totally yummy food, prepared by a wonderful staff and huge portions ..... DAMN! I've told people now, that was an accident!

I need to colour my world another colour of happy too, as I think I've found a local Book Group to join just down the road.

On Amazon today my rating is (static) 3,740. I suppose that I'm still heading in the right direction, but very slowly now. My Daily Selection for Free Kindle Download at Amazon

  •  Kindle Store > Books > Fiction > Children's Fiction > Literature > Science Fiction, Fantasy, Mystery & Horror > Action & Adventure
  • Indie Writer (Self-published)

I'm all about time travel at the moment, having just finished "Daughter of Time" by Sarah Woodbury (a previous Daily Selection that is still available for free download), and so this offering caught my eye:

The Kingdom of Gammalon is taken siege by evil Lord Dravidor of Dark Vale. Its army has been driven out of the kingdom and now seeking refuge in the caves of Mount Kiznon. Their only hope lies in a man that lives in a different world- the present.

Jack O'Shea, the crown prince of Gammalon takes refuge in the present world upon directions by the General of the Gammalonian Army as they seek to reinforce soldiers and weapons after a gruesome battle with the Dark Vale army. Stuck in the present world for eighteen years, he has never spoken of his heritage to his children. So when he is recalled to save Gammalon, he least expects that his four children will be journeying with him to the World of Spassenia. As they cross the gates of dimensions, they enter a world unlike they've ever known-one where magic and power prevail over all who live in it. With perils at every turn they take, they must seek the alliance of the mythical shadow warriors of the Tsez Xian to win the war against Dravidor.

It's had a few reasonable reviews and is available as a free download HERE.

I bang on endlessly about covers, but I have to say that this one is not a particular favourite ... having said that it caught my eye, so maybe it works on some kind of subliminal level.

On Amazon today my rating has slipped back down again to 6,277 (<) - I am still heading in the right direction.  I would love to get to the top 1,000 Reviewers' some day .... so if you find the Daily Kindle Download info useful please go over to my Reviews on Amazon and leave me some positive feedback - which helps my rating, and will earn you my grateful thanks.

My Daily (well almost after a long weekend off) Selection for Free Kindle Download at Amazon

Kindle Store > Books > Fiction > Young Adult > Horror > Vampires
Indie Writer (Self-published) another Author is also credited CJ Pinard

I took the chance and had a nice long weekend break, so we've had a break from my selections.  Never fear though I'm back and, as promised, have a nice Vampire one for you:

Danger lurks in the dead of night...

Seventeen year old Nikki and her twin brother, Nathan, move to the small town of Shore Lake to start over after their mother is brutally attacked. When a missing teenager washes up on shore during their first night at the cabin and there are whispers of vampires in Shore Lake, Nikki begins to realize that there are things roaming in the darkness that are far more sinister than what they left behind in the city.

It's had 21 fairly decent reviews, and I whilst it seems primarily to be aimed at the YA/Teen market, some of those reviews have been from adults that loved it - it has a 4.5 star rating on Amazon.  You can find it available as a free download HERE , and judge for yourself.

On Amazon today my rating has gone up over the weekend to 5,893 (>) - I am still heading in the right direction.  I would love to get to the top 1,000 Reviewers' some day .... so if you find the Daily Kindle Download info useful please go over to my Reviews on Amazon and leave me some positive feedback - which helps my rating, and will earn you my grateful thanks.

My Daily Selection for Free Kindle Download

Kindle Store > Books > Fiction > Fantasy > Horror > Demons
Indie Writer (Self-published)

Demonic possession today ..... oh yes, I thought let's keep it cheerful!.......

Only fanatics and lunatics believe demons can possess human beings. Or at least, that’s what Callie White thought until one possessed her best friend. Now, wanted for murdering the thing that crawled into her friend’s body and dealing with hungers and powers she doesn’t understand, Callie White just wants to die. She just has to make sure no one can bring another demon over before she goes. When that proves more difficult than expected, Callie is pushed to her limits and discovers just how common demon possession really is.

It's a New Release, with no reviews, so we're flying in the dark.  Still, it's a nice cover say I (ever the optimist).

As usual, the only way to judge is to try it, and so I've downloaded it this morning (as with all my freebie selections) and it will sit waiting patiently on my Kindle until I get to it. You can find it available as a free download HERE .

On Amazon today my rating has gone up to 6,705 (>), although I should not really complain as overall I am heading in the right direction.  I would love to get to the top 1,000 Reviewers' some day .... so if you find the Daily Kindle Download info useful please go over to my Reviews on Amazon and leave me some positive feedback - which helps my rating, and will earn you my grateful thanks.

Another (well almost) Daily Selection for Free Kindle Download at Amazon

Kindle Store > Books > Fiction > Children's Fiction > Science Fiction, Fantasy, Mystery and Horror
Published by Sibling Press

It's all about the covers' obviously with me ..... I can't stress just how important a good cover image is in drawing in somebody to your literary work!

For today, I decided to mix it up a bit with this beautifully illustrated work of Children's Fiction.  I think it's a debut novel by Alan Skinner, and according to the review published with the description "it's perfect for Children, Teenagers and Adults too".

You can find it available as a free download HERE.

Get me ..... my rating is down to 7,476 today (>).  I would love to get to the top 1,000 Reviewers' some day .... so if you find the Daily Kindle Download info useful please go over to my Reviews on Amazon and leave me some positive feedback - which helps my rating, and will earn you my grateful thanks.

Having done the most urgent washing, cleaning and dog walking duties required of me today, I'm going to snuggle down in the conservatory with the Russell the Dog, listen to the radio and read.  I'm about 56% through one of my earlier Daily Selections for February, Dreamer of Destiny by Barbara Woster (it's free to Prime Members' at the moment, but listed at £6.63 for regular download).

My Daily Selection for Free Kindle Download at Amazon

Kindle Store > Books > Fiction > Horror > Fantasy > Epic
Indie Writer (Self-published)

I found this one "lurking" in the Horror section, but in actual fact when I decided upon it for my selection, it was listed as Fantasy Epic.  There are actually a few more of them in the series (it seems like it's serialised chapters rather than short stories from this Indie Writer.  Unfortunately, Amazon haven't got any details on him.  If anyone has any knowledge please get in touch.

The Island (Fallen Earth) is available as a free download HERE, with well over 150 reviews (averaging out at 4 stars).

The Island (Fallen Earth ) Part 2 as a free download HERE, just over 100 reviews (averaging out at 4 stars).

The Island (Fallen Earth ) Part 3 as a free download HERE, just over 100 reviews (averaging out at 4.5 stars).

The Island (Fallen Earth) Part 4 - annoying now available as a free download HERE, but I purchased it anyway  - listed at 65p - just over 100 reviews (averaging out at 4 stars).

The Island (Fallen Earth) Final Chapters - again not free (listed at 65p), but it HERE - it would be hugely annoying to have a missing finale. Over 100 reviews (averaging out at 4 stars).

I seriously, hope it is going to be well worth the £1.30 I've forked out!!  As far as the freebie downloads are concerned, I am fed up with saying that they are available free at the time of my post, and I cannot guarantee that they will stay that way .... so I'm not going to say it again.

The good news just keeps on coming now.  I received another book for Review from an Author.  I will share another post about it later on, but in the meantime thank you Roy, I am looking forward to reading it.

This morning I'm back in the game and on the top 10,000 my Amazon Reviewer list is at 9,386 (<).  I would love to get to the top 1,000 Reviewers' some day .... so if you find the Daily Kindle Download info useful please go over to my Reviews on Amazon and leave me some positive feedback - which helps my rating, and will earn you my grateful thanks.
