#472 - A Receiver of Stolen Words

A Receiver of Stolen WordsA Receiver of Stolen Words by Giselle Thompson

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

It's really rare to get 5 stars from me these days, but Giselle has managed. Obviously, there is a link as she has studied the Creative Module that I am currently doing, but it goes beyond just that.

She has a really fluid and lovely voice that is very recognisable, and is a mistress of the short story (a skill I envy). However within each of her pieces there are subtle variations in her style that make them a joy to read.

I'm a regular reader of her blog, and enjoyed the book that she collaborated on with 9 others, 'Circ'. Even though there were so many it was easy to distinguish talents from the other talented authors.

This is highly recommended if you are studying Creative Writing, or just enjoy differently told and well researched literature.

You can purchase a copy HERE, which is an absolute snip at £1.83; she is definitely selling herself short.

Happy reading.

#8 ~ Scribblings of Freya

Watching Monty Don this morning on Gardener's World, cocooned in the quiet before family life begins, I had the inspiration for a Haiku from a phrase he used.

Autumn

The velvet season

Glorious colours spill forth

Winter looming near

I like it so much, I think it might work in a longer piece, so I will mull over the possibilities.

Still no books from Open University, although to be fair to them, they aren't due for delivery yet.  It's just last year they arrived in July.  The two modules I'm doing are not due to start until early October, but I just need to get ahead, purely because I'm doing two modules this coming year; a huge amount of work.

Happy reading.

#380 ~ Letters on a Page

Letters on a pageLetters on a page by Jayde Griffiths

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

The Author of this book of poetry, Jayde Griffiths, very kindly sent me a free Kindle copy in return for an honest Review from me.

I found it to be quite an enjoyable little book of quick to read and digest poems, that one could dip into every once and awhile for enjoyment.

I would say that there were one or two formatting issues, but nothing major.

If poetry is your thing, or even if it isn't but you want to just kick back and let your mind breath for a minute, then give this little book a try - 3 stars from me.

Product Details:

As I mentioned above, Jayde very kindly sent me a Kindle file, but if you fancy giving it a go you can download a copy HERE, at £1.94 it's not a bad price at all.

Errors/Bug Bears:

There were a couple of tiny formatting issues, but then again, that could be down to the way I drag it over to me Kindle, so I'm not making a big thing of them.

Hugs

*Introducing a New Author to the Blog*

Well, almost I missed yesterday as we were too busy putting some colour and personality into our Sitting Room .... we moved a year ago, and apart from add new Sofas and Plantation Shutters it was just cream, cream and cream.  I felt like I was living in somebody's house ... so now it's a big dose of our personality stamped on it.  Still more to do, I ordered the curtain material last night, and there is some furniture to either paint or strip and stain (depending on if it's Guy or I you speak to .... I like painted : He likes stained and waxed wood)!!

I digress, back to the pick for today.  Every now and again a non-fiction title appeals:

Even the best writers occasionally struggle to find the right words for their stories. Sometimes a plot doesn't seem to move along as quickly as it should or a story just doesn't seem to work "right." Maybe you're having a difficult time figuring out what your character should say next. Maybe you're having a difficult time creating characters at all.

Regardless of how far along you are in your story, 99 Prompts for Romance Writers offers just that: 99 short prompts to get you thinking, exploring, and, most of all, writing.

Obviously, I realise that this probably won't appeal to all, but there are a lot of Bloggers/Writers, or indeed, considering giving it a go'ers out there, that might find this useful.

I think I may well bring it forward in my "Slush Mountain" Reading Pile, and see if I can get some inspiration to use on my own novel.  I'm not sure how long it will be available for free download, so get yours by clicking HERE.  I've already got my copy, fingers crossed I can get to it some times this year, the books keep coming and Review work for Authors/Publishers has to take precedence.

On Amazon today my rating is (>) 3,517. I suppose that I'm still heading in the right direction, but very slowly now. I would love to get to the top 1,000 Reviewers' some day ....... so if you find the Daily Kindle Downloads info useful please go over to my Reviews on Amazon and leave me some positive feedback  on some of my reviews (which helps my rating, and will earn you my grateful thanks).

A Sense of Place

Miss Antionelle Boulter quit the stage at The Plough Inn at Ightham Common, and stood with some trepidation awaiting the promised escort to her new home at The Mote.

"You Miss Boulter" a somewhat gruff looking old gentlemen shouted above the noise.

"Indeed I am.  Are you sent from his Grace's household?"

"Hmmphh, far too young. You sure your t'new Guv'ness?"

This question seemed not to necessitate an answer as the burly gent merely heaved her trunk on his shoulder with another "Hmmphh" and strode off towards the small trap waiting just to the side of the Inn yard.

Having deposited his burden inside, he handed Antionelle up without another word, took his seat and gave the office to the fat brown pony to head out onto the narrow track leading uphill from the crossroad that the Inn sat upon.

Mist was beginning to wisp around as, in total silence, they headed into the gloom of the overhanging branches to make their ascent.  Her companion, it seemed was disinclined to small talk, and therefore the only noise to be head apart from the dull thud of the pony's hooves alarmingly eerie call of Rooks somewhere ahead.

After about a quarter of the mile still ascending they reached another crossroads and took a left turn - it seemed travelling even deeper into the forest.  With no sign of habitation along their route, Antionelle was growing more worried with every step the pony took.

Perhaps another five minutes later the trees began to thin, and then came across a small collection of cottages on a tight bend.  This having been negotiated they then turned right and headed off down yet another track, this time turning and bending, at what sometimes seemed an alarming angle of descent.

Antionelle was left wondering exactly where His Grace the Duke of Wrotham actually resided.  Surely, it would be somewhere with slightly more of an open and grand aspect?  Had there been some terrible mistake made by the agency?

....................comments gratefully received.
