Summary:

Really it wasn't that excitingly written, but that's not to say that I didn't enjoy it - comfortable would be the best way to describe it.

A nice quick read to while away the wet and cold afternoon and a 3 star rating.  I am not sure that I will both to read the others unless they come up for freebie download.

My Daily Selection for Freebie Download at Amazon

Kindle Store > Books > Fantasy > Science Fiction > Adventure > Epic

I always say in posts that you can never guarantee how long a Freebie Kindle Download will be around at Amazon, but even I was surprised yesterday.

After I posted my selection first thing in the morning, we headed off for a half hour drive to the in-laws, when we got there over coffee I was telling my Mother-in-Law about the selection I had made.  We clicked the link to the Amazon site, and the listing was no longer free!

I was therefore nervous this morning that today's selection I'd decided upon last night might not be available for freebie download by the time I got around to posting this morning.  Luckily it was, as it has had quite a few good reviews, and I fancy reading it.

As usual you can find it quickly over at Amazon by clicking the large title just above the cover photograph, or click HERE

This morning that my Amazon Reviewer status has improved by a large margin  to 12,234 (making big gains is getting harder the further up the rankings I go).  As always thank you to anyone that has taken the time to leave positive feedback over there for me, it is very much appreciated..

I would love to get to the top 1,000 Reviewers' .... so if you find the Daily Kindle Download info useful please go over to my Reviews on Amazon and leave me some positive feedback - which helps my rating, and will earn you my grateful thanks.

My Daily Selection for Kindle Freebie Download

Kindle Store > Books > Fiction > Historical > Action & Adventure

The challenge that I set myself this year to read as many free Kindle Downloads as possible has certainly started to take me out of my usual Historical Romance comfort zone.  Whilst today's selection is Historical, it's more of a time-travelling adventure with a sense of humour .... see, I'm not just all about Phallic Mushrooms!

As usual you can find it quickly over at Amazon by clicking the large title just above the cover photograph, or click HERE.  It has been on the list for quite a while, so I am not sure how much longer it will be available as a freebie.

This morning that my Amazon Reviewer status has improved by a large margin  to 13,132 (making big gains is getting harder the further up the rankings I go).

#321 (#39 of 2013) - Wedding at King's Convenience ~ Maureen Child *NEW AUTHOR

Kindle > Books > Fiction > Romance > Mills & Boon

Description:

In one unforgettable night, Jefferson King, movie mogul, had made Maura Donohue pregnant. Worse, he’d been avoiding her phone calls. Naturally he’d give the expectant mother a wedding worthy of a King’s bride. But Maura wouldn’t marry without love.

Product Details:

I got this as a free download in December, and it is still listed as free.  Obviously if you are reading this retrospectively it may well not be.  Interestingly, the "you save" price is £13.99.

* * * *

Summary:

My first observation is the price £13.99, that's arrogantly expensive!  I downloaded it for free, so was it worth it .....

No, no no .... is the quick and clear answer to that it would definitely not be worth that price - hello, it's 288 pages long - I read it this afternoon!

Even though it's a Mills and Boon I can only think they have incorrectly priced it - even at say, £3.99 it would be a damp squib for your buck.  Also, I noticed on the front cover that it said "2 in 1".  My downloaded version definitely only had the one story.

Don't get me wrong it's an okay read, a little slow in places, but nothing more.  Only a literary epic masterpiece would induce to pay that.

At best it is worth a 3 star rating.

My Daily Selection for Amazon Freebie Download - ADULT ONLY

Kindle > Books > Fiction > Adult > Erotica

If you are easily offended then today's selection will definitely not be for you.

My first attraction was the cover .... it looks dreamy and interesting, then I went on to read the reviews..... it's 50 Shades of Grey'ish with a nice Fairytale twist, and is reported to be very funny to boot.

As usual you can find it quickly over at Amazon by clicking the large title just above the cover photograph, or click HERE.  It has been on the list for quite a while, so I am not sure how much longer it will be available as a freebie.

I am always saying that I never know how long the selections will be available for free, and I fell into the trap myself late last night.  I had spotted a Zombie book that Lydia fancied reading, and I couldn't be bothered to hit the "1 stop Click to buy" last night (the work of all of about 3 seconds), but decided that I would get it this morning and use it as today's selection.  Overnight, it disappeared off the free bestseller list, and when I went looking it wasn't listed as free any more.  Never mind I made it up to her with two other Zombie books that were listed for free.

I was surprised to see that Long Time Coming by Edie Claire is still available as a freebie download, it's steadily been going up the rankings in the free bestseller list and is now sitting at #3.  It's such a good book that I would love to see it get to number 1, but there again the author positively deserves to earn from it, so hopefully it won't be around as a freebie for much longer - a double-edged sword that one!

This morning that my Amazon Reviewer status has improved a few points to 14,172 (making big gains is getting harder the further up the rankings I go).

#320 (#38 of 2013) - Letter of Love ~ Virginia Henley *NEW AUTHOR

Kindle > Books > Fiction > Historical > Romance

At Hampton Court Palace, Queen Elizabeth has arranged a marriage for her ward Burgundy Bedford with Lord Nicholas Mountjoy, Earl of Devon.

This union will join two great shipping families and provide Mountjoy with vessels to transport his troops to Ireland to quell the uprising led by Tyrone of Ulster.

Between the pages of the book, Burgundy finds a letter written to her by her mother when her daughter was born.

The book's ancient legacy and the letter of love touches her heart and alters the course of her life forever.

Product Details:

I snagged this as a freebie on the Kindle Store back in December, but currently it is listed as 77p.  You can get it HERE.

Novella - 35 pages.

* * * *

Summary:

Okay for a really quick read, as it was only 35 pages long.  I snagged it as a free download, but I don't think I would have been happy to pay the current listed price even so.  Not because of the length, but the lack of credibility.

Notwithstanding that this is a work of fiction, very early on Good Queen Bess bared her chest to a nobleman .... really, would that really have happened? I know that morals were lax them, but come on.

The next incident of credibility was towards the end, where the couple were riding in landscape of  Rhododendron and Azaleas.  From my limited knowledge of our history, I'm pretty certain that they were brought over from China in the late 18th century.

I'm no Historian, and I am willing to be corrected if the above points are in fact correctly stated by the author.  Call me a nitpicking whatsit, but a passing nod at research is nice to have.

That along with a few typographical errors kept the overall rating down to a 2.5 stars, and probably on Amazon just a 2 star rating as it doesn't rate the upgrade.

#319 (#37 of 2013) - The Clarendon Rose ~ Kathryn Anthony *NEW AUTHOR

The Clarendon Rose ~ Kathryn Anthony

Kindle > Books > Fiction > Romance > Historical

Description:

Word spread through the countryside like the whisper of the wind through the branches of the trees: he’s back.

The prodigal son had returned.

But that was one of the few things the rumours could agree upon. Some claimed he was a changed man—ready, finally, to shoulder the responsibilities that he had shirked for so many years. Others claimed that any apparent changes were merely a ruse—once a ne’er do well, always a ne’er do well. And the new duke had been far worse than a ne’er do well: he had been a rake, a degenerate and a scoundrel.

The other thing that everyone agreed upon, whether tenant, servant or villager, was that it was a fine thing that Miss Tina had finally gotten engaged to Lord Edmund. That, at least, would keep her safe from the prodigal’s degeneracy—for surely even the duke could not have sunk so low as to seduce his own brother’s betrothed!

Valentina Merriweather remembers all too well the dark, broodingly handsome duke from years earlier, when he had come to visit his family estates. Now, back from his wild travels to the far reaches of the earth, he is darker and more tortured than ever. Tina soon finds that she is attracted to him with an urgency that spells danger for her peace of mind, her conscience, and for the most valuable commodity that a genteel woman of her murky lineage and meagre fortune possesses: her reputation.

Product Details:

I managed to snag this as a freebie Kindle download, but at the time of writing the post it is listed as £1.87 HERE.

Medium length - circa 245 pages

* * * *

Summary:

For me this wasn't the most scintillating read of my life, but neither was it bad.

I did loose focus during the first third of the book, however, the plot and place picked up over the remainder.  There were a couple of typos, and the truly irritating sentence towards the end "....he pulled on some pants" .... really, they didn't wear pants.  I do feel that if you want to write an historical novel it does behove you to try to stay at least true to the details, but that could just be me.  I'd like to find out others opinion on that one.

The characters at points left me a little underwhelmed, so all in all I think that it is worthy of a 3.5 star rating.  As far as an Amazon rating is concerned though it was not worthy of upgrading to a 4, so it will be a three.

I'll See You In You Dreams ~ Tony Miller

Kindle Book > Fiction > Historical > Ghosts and Paranormal

Today I decided that a nice ghost story might be just the think.  I don't know anything about this author other than the fact that he is American and is a freelance - so I am guessing that this is self-published.  No reviews have been done, so I just went on gut instinct and picked it for today.

As usual you can find it quickly over at Amazon by clicking the large title just above the cover photograph, or click HERE.  It has been on the list for quite a while, so I am not sure how much longer it will be available as a freebie.

Product Details:

This is one that I picked up as a freebie Kindle download, and at the time of writing this post it is still listed as available free HERE.  Obviously, if you are reading this post retrospectively that may have changed.

Medium length - 257 pages.

* * * *

Summary:

This is the first time reading a Lucinda Brant novel, and I have to say I was impressed from the very beginning.

She has a very Georgette Heyer'esque style, although lacking any cant humour, which if a similar could have been added would have made this book perfect.

Well developed and written plot, with interesting multi-layered characterisations.

I am definitely going to be reading more by her, and can't wait to get my hands on the next in the Roxton series, Autumn Duchess.

All considered a very worthy 5 stars for this exceptionally well written offering.

All the Paths of Shadow ~ Frank Tuttle

Kindle Store > Books > Fiction > Fantasy > Epic

Today I decided on a Fantasy Epic as the selection ... this one has had  only two reviews so far, but they have both been good.  I'm looking forward to getting around to reading it myself.

Another Freebie Kindle download that I snagged around Christmas time, and at the time of writing this post it's still available for free.  Obviously, if you are reading this post retrospectively that may have well of changed in the interim.

Full length - 320 pages.

Originally published by Kensington Zebra Ballad, October 2000.

* * * *

Summary:

Although the plot was quite well thought through, unfortunately the writing didn't quite live up to it.

Don't get me wrong, it wasn't terrible writing, just mediocre.

I found that I become a bit annoyed with both the Hero and Heroine.  He for his self-pity and her for her (it seemed) endless quoting of fairy tales.

As far as the jeopardy portion of the plot was concerned, the villain did come across as a little implausible.

All things considered a 3 star read.  I wouldn't let me so-so review put you off, give it a try.  I will certainly be reading more by this author to see if this was just below her usual standard, or all she the standard she can achieve.

Box set of 3 books - overall length 1055 pages.

* * * *

Summary:

The main male characters for this boxed set came across as a bit to willing to preach if you ask me.

Very much the same forumula across the books, girl is a bit fluffy and doesn't care about much other than pleasure, needs man to show her how to be a better human.

Having that said that. I did enjoy manage to read them all. Give it a go.

Not sure I would have been happy if I hadn't picked it up as a free read though.

4 star rating, which was for the storyline and value for money as a freebie download combined.  I am not completely certain I would bother with this author again, but never say never.

Novella - 158 pages

Book 1 in the Treaty Series

* * * *

Summary:

With a title so full of cheese that it could easily pass for a Welsh Rarebit, and a Kitch Regency Cover image I was dubious to say the least for this offering.

It isn't something I would usually go for, but as I've got a two fold challenge for myself this year (to read as many freebie downloads and widen my book horizons) I decided to risk it.

What I got from my perception of title and cover combined, was in fact so very different, and a real treat in point of fact.

The Prologue was the weakest part, as it was claggy and a little confusingly written.  I would seriously suggest a some re-working should be undertaken to fix it, which would go a long way to ramping up the book's possible rating.

Whilst I loved Ruth/Anita characterisation, it was a little weak in places and a tiny bit of a pity fest.

I completely fell in love with Jordan.  My favourite scene is where he scents his mate.

There were minor typographical and grammatical errors, which it would be nice to see fixed.  There were additionally inconsistencies in names - this is a bug bear of mine - however the writing was overall well done and the problems mentioned didn't irritate me overly and put me off the book, or alter the ultimate rating.

This could easily run the distance as a full length piece of fiction if it could be tightened up and developed a little more.

Having gone into it expecting nothing in particular, I was very pleased to find that actually it was difficult to put down, so a 4 star rating (4.5 if I could) for this offering by joint authors.

I am looking forward to the next in the series, and will be downloading that very shortly.  I can't wait to find out what happens to the smelly and stained Professor.

As a footnote, I notice that neither of the authors have "About me" pages on Amazon.  It would be very nice to find out a bit more about them.

Kay

Daily Selection for Kindle Freebie Download at Amazon

Time Crystal Convergence ~ Ethan Somerville & Max Kenny

Kindle > Fiction > Science Fiction > Hi Tech

Okay, today/s selection is based actually on the current book that I'm reading co-authored by Ethan Somerville (I Married an Alien), which is coincidentally also available for free download at the current time.

The subject choice is not something that I would usually go for, but as I've challenged myself to see how many freebie Kindle downloads I can pick up this year to try and force a wider horizon for my reading, I thought I would give the first one a go ..... and hence the second choice for today.  Can you get a feel that I'm enjoying 'I Married an Alien'?

The 'Time Crystal' is co-authored by Max Kenny, and I want to try and get a feel for whether it was the combination of Ethan Somerville with Emma Daniels that proved such a great combination in the first book, or if Ethan Somerville is the catalyst.

By the by, there is also another freebie download available by Ethan and Emma entitled 'Curse of the Kingsmans'.  Thinking about it I'm probably going to download it now, even though I have a very long list already to get through, just so that I know I have it for comparison, just in case it goes back to a list price.  Ahh, the beauty of a Kindle, it never ceases to amaze me that I happily tote around 100's of books at a time!  To think I remember uttering the words "..... noooo, not for me I like a REAL book" .... stupid girl.

This morning I am a very happy camper as my Amazon Reviewer status has whooshed to 18,587, thank you to anyone that has taken the time to leave positive feedback over there for me, it is very much appreciated..

I would love to improve upon this .... I would love to get to the top 1,000 .... so if you find the Daily Kindle Download info useful please go over to my Reviews on Amazon and leave me some positive feedback - which helps my rating, and will earn you my grateful thanks.

Product Details:

I managed to pick this one up for free for Kindle just before Christmas, and at the time of writing this post it is still listed as free HERE.  That's isn't to say if you are reading this post retrospectively that will always be the case.

Novella - 188 pages.

Summary:

Short punchy novella with betrayal at its heart, and how love can conquer all.

There were some bits that lagged a bit in the telling, however all all it was well written, and I'd certainly choose something by this author again.

All in all a 3 star read, a shame it wasn't slightly longer with a bit more jeopardy woven in as it could have garnered more.
